Weekend Feast in JB

Monday, June 15, 2015 at 22:20      No comments

Spent my last weekend shopping and having Seafood in Johor Bahru! Despite the long queue, everything seems ok!

We queued for a good 2 hrs before getting pass custom into Johor Bahru. We were all famished and headed to Sushi Zanmai at JBCC. Food was quite good actually. I had cold soba to avoid more calories intake later on in the evening where we will eat seafood! We also shared some delicious sushi!

We shopped in KSL, had coffee before heading over to Da Ma Hua Yuan (Taman Seri Tebrau) for dinner. We patronized the first stall, Xiang Ji. Food's not too bad but not fantastic either. Their sambal sauce was fairly good and the cereal prawns and deer meat to me was below average.

The crayfish was good! The sauce can be richer though! The chicken soup tasted weird. It's too sour for comfort and we get a refund for it after complaining about it.

All in all, we spent a total of 139.60 RM ($50.02) for seafood! It is seriously cheap! It is definitely worth having seafood here again.

金龙咖哩鱼头

Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 12:22      No comments

We went to Johor Baru a few weeks back for a getaway. Finally we tried the 金龙咖哩鱼头 which always has a long long queue.

This place was introduced by my neighbour and my brother. We went there once but did not try it due to the depressing long queue. Now, dear and I finally got to try it. We reached there around 11 and the queue has already started.

We thought it would take up to an hour plus before we get our seats. Fortunately we waited for about 45 minutes before getting a seat. Since it is not the kind of food my dear would like, we ordered small instead.

We were quickly served with the piping hot bowl of curry fish head. The dish was served in a clay pot which preserves heat. They were generous with the vegetables.

In my opinion, the curry was right but I would prefer it to be a little spicier. The meat of the fish is very tender and fresh. The vegetables were cooked long enough to be soft but not overcooked. I felt that the serving of the fish was not enough for a person who like this dish. Do get at least a medium if you want more fish meat.

Do try 金龙咖哩鱼头 when you're in JB folks. Enjoy!

JB Weekend Getaway - Day 2

Food food and more FOOD!! Dragon-I and Dontaku Japanese Restaurant =)

For lunch, we dine at Dragon-I as usual. Too bad I can't find the Pork Belly Ramen in the menu. *sad* I had dumpling ramen instead. After we had lunch, we went to watch Despicable Me 2. The movie was funny! Especially the minions singing pop songs.

We had dinner at Dontaku. I must stress that the service time for this restaurant is slow. Food will arrive around 30 - 40 mins after ordering. However, the food is awesome!

Dear had Seafood Stone Rice. The rice smell super nice and tasted awesome. The curry was quite nice and the udon was smooth. The chicken was crispy but tasted kinda weird - charred and bitter. Do try the rice and also the ramen. Enjoy folks!

JB Weekend Getaway - Day 1

Sunday, July 14, 2013 at 14:18      No comments

We went on a short getaway trip to Johor Baru last weekend. Finally, time to spend some quality time together =)

We touched down JB in the evening and went hunting for food. We settled down at Kim Gary Restaurant and ordered our meal - Bowl of rice which seems so delicious and tasty. Below are the food we had.

I must say the rice was superb, the fragrance and taste of the rice. Yummy! The meat and the vegetables are cooked perfectly. Most importantly, the cost is half of that in Singapore. (yet to try Singapore's Kim Gary Restaurant).

My Peppermint with Aloe Vera drink is kind of disappointing. It is served with strips of green aloe vera jelly at the bottom of the cup and a can of Sprite. Soft drinks - not my kind of drink!

My princess however on the other hand is happily enjoying her Vitagen ice blended. She is busily slurping the ice while I gulped down my green coloured Sprite.

After dinner, we took a stroll to our hotel - AmanSari Hotel City Centre. It is just directly across City Square. The room was decent, clean and with shower facilities. We spent our night watching The Intouchables on my macbook before going to bed.

We stayed at the 19th floor and had a pretty good view. We could see the custom and Singapore from here. Surprisingly, I managed to connect to Singapore 3G services and could surf the net and make phone calls. Enjoy folks!

3 Years Anniversary JB Trip -
The Election Atmosphere

Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at 23:19      No comments

We happened to be in Malaysia during their election period. Flags and banners hang on the streets.

I decided to take one or two shots emphasizing on the general election. The photos were taken outside Pelangi Shopping Mall where we shopped for some fruits for our dinner.

I made some effort saturating the color of the flags and fading out everything else. I achieve this by using the HSL/Color panel in Lightroom. I increase the blue slightly and drop the saturation of all the other colors. Hope you like the effect folks!

3 Years Anniversary JB Trip -
Legoland Malaysia

Monday, April 29, 2013 at 14:32      No comments

We spent a few hours in Legoland Malaysia touring the miniature buildings and enjoying some of the rides. It was a cloudy day and we had fun!

Walking a couple of metres in, we reached the entrance of Legoland Malaysia. The magnificent lego-like signboard with striking colours never fail to capture the attention of tourists.

We entered Legoland and came across several miniature buildings. I wonder how many Lego bricks it took to make up a structure like that? It sure takes lots of time and effort!

The building above replicates Sultan Abdul Samad Building - one of the oldest building in Kuala Lumpur. The Malaysia flag was hoisted in front of Sultan Abdul Samad Building for the first time in 1957.

Mosque Masjid Jamek is one of the oldest Mosque in Kuala Lumpur. It was built on the first Malay burial ground in the city located at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak River.

Putra Mosque is located next to Perdana Putra which houses the Malaysian Prime Minister's office.

The Fullerton Hotel is a five-star luxury hotel situated near the mouth of the Singapore River. It was originally known as The Fullerton Building, and also as the General Post Office Building.

The Merlion is a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, used as a mascot of Singapore. The fish body represents Singapore's origin as a fishing village and the lion head represents Singapore's original name, Singapura, which means Lion City.

During the 1860s, Boat Quay was a busy port, handling three quarters of all sea trades. Today, it is turned into a popular tourist destination with restaurants and bars.

Lego Kingdom gives an atmosphere of ancient times where knights, kings and dragons exists. There is a roller coaster ride named The Dragon here at Lego Kingdom. Hearing the name of the ride send chills down my spine!

The Lego Tower which gives you a 360-degrees panorama view of Legoland. When we board the tower, the sky was dark and gloomy. We could see future expansions of Legoland currently under construction.

Right under the Lego Tower, there is an area for kids to play and run around. But, here I am like a big kid, ROAR!!!! I'm giving my best roar inside the Lion.

At Mummy Land, there's a ride where you enter the tunnels to slay the spiders and mummies using the laser guns.

We reached Legoland Express Station. After walking so much we were tired and we boarded the train. Just too bad the train brought us back to where we started after travelling one big round.

During the train ride, I was fortunate to catch a shot of this little girl driving a Lego car. She was waving at someone on the train. Probably some kids or tourist who wants her attention.

We had a break at The Café. We ordered a Turkey Ham Sandwich and drinks. The sandwich nice! They were generous with the sauce and ingridents. I can't help but notice this Eurasian baby. She was playing with her elder brother and the staffs working at the cafe.

I would recommend Legoland to families with young kids. Most of the attractions here are catered for kids; Lego Horse Rides, Mummy Rides, playgrounds, driving centre, fire fighting centre etc.

3 Years Anniversary JB Trip -
Dontaku Japanese Restaurant

Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 13:18      No comments

Dear treated me to a holiday at Johor Baru. We visited Legoland and spent quality time together.
~ Thanks my love!

We touched down Johor Baru around half past twelve and went "hunting" for food in City Square. We roam the four levels of the shopping mall and ended up in Dontaku Japanese Restaurant.

Dontaku was well decorated, creating an atmosphere as if you were in Japan. The restaurant was brightly lit with beautiful photos and realistic plastic bamboo plants. There is a wall partition with Japanese characters and vases.

Dear ordered Hotate Ramen and I had Chasu Tonkotsu Ramen. The food took quite a while to be served. We waited almost thirty minutes for it. Fortunately, the food was great! Both the soup was rich.

The soup for Hotate Ramen tasted sweet with the strong clam flavor. The soup for the Chasu Tonkotsu Ramen tends to the salty side. The meat was tender and ramen was well cooked. The eggs were perfect! Seventy percent cooked with semi solid egg yolk and soft egg white.

The price was affordable. We spent RM 46.40 in all. Comparing it with those restaurants in Singapore, we saved quite a bit as the portion of the food was also much greater than those in Singapore.

A Day at City Square (Johor Baru)

Monday, March 11, 2013 at 17:35      No comments

Went to JB yesterday. It's my first time there! We boarded bus 950 from woodlands into JB. The bus was packed. Luckily the journey was short.

We had lunch at 旺角茶餐厅 (Some Hong Kong Cafe). Food there wasn't too bad. I had a bad tummy so, I had something light instead. Clear Dumpling Soup Ramen, the perfect choice.

We got bold and decided to try out Ginger Calamanis Tea. The drink tasted like passion fruit drink with a slight touch of ginger.

After lunch, we watched Jack the Giant Slayer. The prices of watching a movie at JB is super CHEAP! We could catch 2 movies here with the price of 1 back in Singapore.

After the movie, we had dessert at 許留山 (Hui Liu Shan). We had Mango Feast. Lots and lots of mango.

I love that cake looking dessert. It's unique. It tasted like cake and ice cream. The other dishes tastes like mango (duh mango feast).

The good thing is that the desserts are not too sweet and well prepared!

Lastly, we had dinner at Dragon-I. I've noticed this restaurant is always packed and has a queue, so we decided to try it out.

I had pork belly ramen and it's one of the best I had. The pork belly was super soft, tender and not too oily. The soup was just right, not too thick.

We had Xiao Long Bao too! I'm gonna use this word, "Organismic!" (Haha). The juice inside the bun was just right and simply tasty!!!

After dinner we bought a couple slices of Secret Recipe cakes before returning back home.
