Rochor Centre was built in 1977 and listed as a landmark to be protected by the Urban Redevelopment Authority.
However, it will be demolished to make way for the construction of the North-South Expressway by 2016. There are 4 blocks in total(Blocks 1 through 4). The first three floors consist of shophouses and offices. The fourth floor is a common area, and residents stay from the fifth floor onwards.
The ground floor consists of mainly coffee shops and a FairPrice supermart. The flooring still uses the retro textile patterns of brick red and orange. I named this place "The Plaza". This is the place where elderlies spent their time sitting around, drinking coffee or feeding the pigeons.
On the 2nd and 3rd floor, there are a number of long lost shophouses. There is this shop that makes handmade paper houses, boats, lanterns which are incenses for the gods. There are also a number of beauty salons along side other shops.
I love how the cup boards, push carts and other stuffs are placed. The dim lighting and dirt adds more impact to the surroundings creating a rustic look. This is what makes Rochor Centre unique.
From certain angles around Rochor Centre, you get to spot the Raffles Hospital, the shopping heavens - Bugis Street, Bugis Junction and Bugis Plus.
Stay tune for part two of Rochor Centre folks!
